Background
GLCN is promoting the development of national land cover
data sets ready to be used in the GLCN software Advanced
Database Gateway (ADG). ADG provides a user-friendly interface and advanced
functionalities to analyse LCCS-based land cover data sets by breaking down
classes in their classifiers for further aggregations and analysis.

Source data for this initiative is the most recent (2005) and detailed
(300 m) global land cover database available on the market:
the Globcover,
which was published in 2008 as result of an initiative launched in 2004 by
the
European
Space Agency (ESA). Globcover is currently the best archive
on land cover globally.
Data sets
As part of its activities, GLCN has promoted the re-processing of the
Globcover archive at national extent for the entire African continent
(excluding areas not covered by the source data).
The resulted data sets are vector based (.shp), coded
using LCCS classes, and topologically corrected to be used in the GLCN's
Advanced Database Gateway software, which allows the data set to be
further analysed, for example breaking down the LCCS classes in their
classifiers for user-defined aggregations.
The re-processing is completed for 53 countries. They are published on the
FAO's Geonetwork
metadata catalogue and the list is described below.
