The workshop was held in Pretoria, South Africa, on 13-17 December 2004. It was organized by
FAO
with the financial and technical support of the United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), the
Government of Italy and the Government of the Netherlands.
The workshop was hosted by the
Department of Land
Affairs, Chief Directorate of Surveys and Mapping with the logistical
support of the FAO Representative for South Africa.
Countries
The workshop was intended for technical individuals from national
institutes involved in land cover mapping. 40 participants from
12 countries attended the workshop:
Angola, Botswana, Comoros Islands, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius,
Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland,
Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Goals
This initiative aimed to provide participants, who were mainly
officials from national institutes involved in land cover mapping,
with training on land cover mapping, LCCS and other geo-information
technologies, which can be used on both national and regional projects.
The workshop was also used to initiate regional collaborations on GLCN
projects.
